Why we adopted siblings

Heather and Carlton's adoption story

An adoptive mom and dad hug in the kitchen

When Heather and Carlton began talking about adopting from foster care, they agreed to be open to children of any age who needed a family, and they felt strongly about keeping siblings together. Today, their 10 children include three sibling groups, ranging in age from 2 to 25.

“Adopting sibling groups gives kids a kind of permanency they don’t always get with an individual adoption,” Heather says. “Our kids had relationships with each other before they entered our home.”

Adopting siblings together preserves a strong bond—and that means one less upheaval in a child’s life.
