Family-based care
Children belong in families—not orphanages
Decades of research show that family is the best place for a child’s physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual development.
But poverty, disease, violence, and catastrophes often put immense pressure on families, jeopardizing their ability to stay together. In fact, according to UNICEF, nearly 90% of the world’s orphans have at least one living parent who cannot afford to safely care for them.
Children thrive in loving homes. That’s why Bethany provides family-based care.
How Bethany keeps children in families
Reunification
First, we work to remove children from institutions and reunify their families. We help their caregivers address the challenges that may have caused them to surrender their children to orphanages.
Foster care and adoption
When reunification isn’t possible, we partner with churches, governments, and other community groups to recruit and train foster and adoptive parents.
Consultation and advocacy
We work with local governments and institutions to promote family-based care as an alternative to orphanages and help to build legal structures to protect vulnerable children.
Help change the world through family
Today, over 150 million kids around the world don’t have a permanent home. To us, that’s simply unacceptable.
