I know what it's like to deserve a family

An adoptee becomes an adoptive parent

An African American adoptive family looks at their son's adoption photo book

When her foster brother needed an adoptive home, Kia stepped up to be Jesús’ mom. Adopted from foster care, Kia knew what it was like to wait for a family. And Jesús had already waited six years in foster care. “I didn’t think Jesús deserved that,” she said.

Now married, Kia and her husband, Lawrence, are Jesús’ family. Together, they advocate for the large number of waiting children in foster care who need the permanency of an adoptive home.

If you’re thinking about adoption from foster care but not sure you’re ready, consider Lawrence’s advice: “Love is the number one thing,” he said. “If your choice is to love, then kids who need a foster parent or need to be adopted, they think you’re ready.”
